Business applications # Business applications that run the actual work, built on Microsoft Azure. **Trevor Stuckless builds business applications for trades and growing companies in Ontario, starting with the ones his company, Blue Crane Works, runs itself.** The Blue Crane app holds job-site records, Inventory tracks parts and stock, and Blackbox turns paper archives into searchable documents; all three run on Microsoft Azure. Custom applications for other companies go into that customer's own Azure or Microsoft 365 account. Every record a contractor may one day have to produce, filed against the job it belongs to. It is organised as five registries: worksites, staff and crew, vehicles and equipment, receipts and expenses, and safety and company records. A site is planned in stages, crew join it by scanning a QR code, and sign-offs gate each phase. Tickets, certificates and insurance raise a warning before they lapse, receipts are scanned and costed to the job, and the safety file can be handed to an inspector as read-only. The 126 contractor forms from the free [Form Maker](https://bluecraneworks.ca/tools.html) are built in and attach to the job they were filled for. ## How do Inventory and Blackbox handle stock and old paper? Inventory asks at sign-up what kind of business it is serving, then supplies that trade's categories and questions and switches off whatever the trade has no use for. Garage and overhead door shops, independent retail and auto salvage are the three business types today, and suggested prices come from the shop's own sales history. Blackbox starts on a phone held over an open binder. Each photograph is saved to the device before anything else happens, so a basement with no signal never costs a page, and uploads resume when the connection returns. The result is one searchable document whose every line points back to the photograph it was read from. ## What are these applications built with? Server code runs on [Azure Functions](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-functions/functions-overview), data lives in Cosmos DB, the interfaces are served from [Azure Static Web Apps](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/static-web-apps/overview), AI features run on Azure OpenAI and secrets sit in Key Vault. The shared platform behind the Blue Crane app and Inventory is roughly a hundred functions, run by one person. For another company, the same stack means the application lives in the tenant they already pay for, their people sign in with the accounts they already have, and their data is not trapped inside one more subscription.
